Tokio Marine Insurance Vietnam (TMIV) has launched a new social initiative called 'Joyful Education' to support children on the autism spectrum through visual art training, reinforcing its commitment to building a more sustainable and inclusive society. The programme uses the transformative power of art to help children with autism express themselves, build confidence and strengthen emotional connections, ultimately empowering their integration into the wider community.

Autism spectrum disorder has become increasingly widespread globally, with significant rises in diagnosis rates over the decades. According to a 2023 report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in 36 children is diagnosed with autism, a figure that highlights the importance of societal support systems for affected families. In Vietnam, estimates from the General Statistics Office in 2019 suggest there are around one million individuals living with autism, with roughly 1 per cent of newborns affected each year, underscoring that autism is a significant social issue requiring collective intervention.

Recognising the communicative and developmental challenges often faced by children with autism, TMIV’s 'Joyful Education' initiative harnesses art’s unique ability to provide non-verbal channels of expression and emotional engagement. The programme is designed not merely to teach artistic techniques but to foster joy, confidence and a sense of belonging among participants.

In partnership with Tohe, a Vietnamese social enterprise known for its work with disadvantaged and special-needs children, TMIV is rolling out the six‑month project throughout 2025 and 2026. The curriculum is structured around three core pillars: knowledge, skills and emotions, guided by the philosophy 'Safe Environment Shared Growth Inclusion and Respect'. Activities include three in‑person creative art courses at specialised centres in Hanoi, two online art courses for children with special needs nationwide, and an art exhibition to showcase the children’s creations and promote community dialogue.

Since November 2025, weekly sessions at three specialised Hanoi centres Sao Mai, Hand in Hand, and the Hai Dang Psychological Education Centre have engaged children in 90‑minute classes that blend warm‑ups, storytelling, art creation and mini exhibitions. These sessions are designed to provide a safe, stimulating and respectful space for children to explore shapes, colors and textures while expressing ideas and emotions with increasing confidence.

Participants have responded positively, with many children who were initially shy gradually becoming more engaged, asking questions, sharing ideas and creating imaginative works that reflect their inner worlds. Every piece of art and every session is viewed by TMIV as more than a creative exercise; it is a bridge that nurtures confidence and helps children connect more fully with others.

Beyond artistic skills, 'Joyful Education' embodies TMIV’s broader corporate philosophy of 'Inspiring Confidence, Accelerating Progress' and its aspiration 'To Be a Good Company'. Through this initiative, the insurer seeks to contribute to a compassionate, inclusive and sustainable society where children with autism are supported in developing essential life skills and are encouraged to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
