- Focus on integrating medicine and engineering education after 2024 merger
Japan has approved the Institute of Science Tokyo as the second university to benefit from a massive 10 trillion yen government fund aimed at building world-class research institutions and nurturing future-ready talent.
The Ministry of Education’s certification allows the university to receive over 10 billion yen in subsidies in its first year, once it submits a detailed plan to boost research and innovation, expected as early as February. Education Minister Yohei Matsumoto said the institute is expected to lead Japan’s higher education and research ecosystem while delivering tangible results that support national growth.
Founded in 2024 through the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, the Institute of Science Tokyo pledged reforms to foster closer collaboration between medicine and engineering. The initiative aims to enhance interdisciplinary skills, promote advanced learning, and strengthen job pathways for students and researchers.
