University Of Leicester Fosters New UK-China Education Partnerships

    The University of Leicester has taken a significant step toward strengthening international academic collaboration with the launch of a new network designed to foster deeper UK-China educational partnerships and support the continued growth of transnational education (TNE) programs. The initiative was officially unveiled during the inaugural Transnational Education Forum, held in Shanghai on June 12 and 13, bringing together leading universities, education organizations, and policymakers from both countries to explore new opportunities for collaboration in higher education.

    The forum comes at a pivotal time for the global education sector, as demand for international learning experiences continues to rise and governments seek innovative ways to expand access to world-class education. Transnational education, which enables students to study for internationally recognized qualifications while remaining in their home country, has become a major pillar of educational cooperation between the United Kingdom and China. Under this model, educational programs are delivered in China while degrees and qualifications are awarded by institutions based overseas.

    The United Kingdom has emerged as a global leader in transnational education, particularly in China, where the sector has experienced rapid growth over the past decade. Supported by the British Council, the UK currently maintains more than 260 joint degree partnerships across mainland China, making it one of the most active international education providers in the country. These partnerships have played an important role in expanding access to international qualifications while strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two nations.

    The importance of the sector is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. According to targets set by China’s Ministry of Education, enrollment in TNE programs is projected to grow from an estimated 800,000 students today to as many as eight million students in the future. Education experts view this ambitious expansion as a major opportunity for international universities seeking to broaden their presence in one of the world’s largest higher education markets.

    The University of Leicester’s Transnational Education Forum attracted participation from several prominent Chinese universities and educational organizations, including British Council China, Shanghai International Education Association, Chongqing Medical University, Southwest University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, Shanghai Normal University, Aston Institute in Hong Kong SAR, and Index Education. Representatives from these institutions engaged in discussions focused on expanding academic mobility, collaborative research, faculty exchanges, and innovative teaching models designed to meet the evolving needs of students in an increasingly interconnected world.

    Participants at the forum expressed strong interest in developing deeper partnerships with the University of Leicester, reflecting growing demand for collaborative educational initiatives that can provide students with global perspectives, internationally recognized qualifications, and enhanced career opportunities. Education leaders highlighted the importance of building stronger cross-border networks that promote knowledge exchange and prepare graduates for success in a rapidly changing global economy.

    Catherine Sinclair-Jones, Director of East China at the British Council and Consul for Culture and Education at the British Consulate-General in Shanghai, emphasized the transformative impact of UK-China transnational education partnerships. She noted that such collaborations play a critical role in developing globally minded students equipped with the cultural understanding, international awareness, and practical skills needed to address complex global challenges. She also stressed the importance of strengthening future generations’ understanding of China and fostering meaningful engagement between young people from both countries.

    Speaking at the event, Professor Sir Nishan Canagarajah, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, described the forum as both timely and strategically important. He noted that China continues to place strong emphasis on expanding transnational education programs while also remaining one of the world’s largest sources of international students studying abroad. According to Canagarajah, the forum provides a valuable platform for building new educational and research partnerships that can enhance UK-China relations, support academic innovation, and create broader opportunities for students, researchers, and institutions on both sides. He added that by working together, universities can establish stronger educational bridges that contribute to global knowledge sharing and help prepare students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
