Owner & Director
In the Philippines, an archipelago with many different cultures and communities, education is highly regarded as the means of achieving advancement. Giving its citizen's access to high-quality education is made more difficult by the nation's more than 7,000 islands. Educational leaders in the country hope to improve the quality of education by adopting cutting-edge methods, providing educators with useful tools and resources, and coordinating curricula with present and future industry demands. Dr Elizabeth Reyes Enverga, Owner and Director of International School for Better Beginnings, distinguishes herself in the Philippine educational landscape by encouraging innovation and collaboration to uplift communities in the Philippines.
With more than 20 years of experience in both business and education, Elizabeth is a renowned educator, leader, and advocate. She established the International School for Better Beginnings in 1997 and is the school's owner and director, promoting high-quality education.
Elizabeth’s approach to leadership transformed the school into a close-knit community that felt more like a family than a traditional educational institution. With a clear focus on fostering relationships, she eschewed hierarchical structures that often created barriers between staff and administration. Her leadership was built on trust, open communication, and mutual respect. Teachers and non-academic staff, from custodians to cafeteria workers, were encouraged to collaborate freely, share ideas, and contribute to the school’s mission in meaningful ways. As a result, the school became not just a place of learning, but a dynamic, supportive community where everyone, regardless of their role, felt a shared responsibility for the success of every student.
International School for Better Beginnings
The International School for Better Beginnings (ISBB) encourages curiosity to promote the growth of its students in all facets of their lives. The school fosters a friendly and encouraging atmosphere where students are inspired to pursue their interests, hone their skills, and engage with the outside world. The school equips them to confidently take on challenges by fusing a strong academic foundation with critical thinking and an appreciation for diverse viewpoints.
Academics, athletics, the arts, and community service are just a few of the varied activities the school provides to help students discover their interests and strengths. This diversity fosters students' intellectual, social, emotional, and creative development while boosting their self-esteem and skill set.
What sets the school apart is its holistic approach to student development. Through community service, enriching extracurricular activities, and opportunities for personal growth, students are instilled with a strong sense of purpose, compassion, and responsibility. They emerge not only as competent individuals but as global citizens ready to lead with integrity and empathy.
The school continuously updates its curriculum to meet international standards and stay ahead of the curve, making it a pioneer in forming education for a modern, globalized world.
It is assisted in its efforts by consultants and experts who are invited to share ideas and new developments with teachers about pedagogy, global education, and course content. These inputs allow teachers to develop students’ critical thinking, higher-order cognitive abilities, and creative problem-solving techniques.
Innovations & Collaboration
The school has embraced innovation in recognition of the quick changes in curriculum, technology, and socioeconomic circumstances to deliver high-quality, comprehensive education. It quickly embraced digital tools such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) to guarantee smooth online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These platforms promoted global connectivity by providing students with multimedia resources, international experts, and virtual field trips. Digital systems improved administration, communication, and record-keeping while fostering stronger parent relationships through open communication and involvement.
The school also promotes collaborations with local companies, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies to close gaps in resource-constrained settings. These collaborations have included programs such as community pantries, mobile libraries, and scholarships for disadvantaged students.
The Robust Way Ahead
The institution adopted a curriculum in 2019, which emphasized the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. “In keeping with the Philippine basic education curriculum, this approach incorporates global issues, such as poverty, inequality, and responsible consumption, into fundamental subjects like science, math, and social studies. Students develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities and learn how real-world problems are interconnected through the promotion of interdisciplinary learning”, asserts Elizabeth.
True leadership empowers others, fosters collaboration, and creates a culture of shared purpose
The curriculum connects classroom lessons with social action, empower students to take action through the school's Youth for Better program, which emphasizes community involvement through projects like public health campaigns, coastal cleanups, and empowering marginalized sectors of society.
The success of the SDG-centered curriculum is exemplified by ISBB’s global recognition. Its faculty and administrators have been invited to discuss the school’s practices in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, in Kuala Lumpur with the Malaysian Ministry of Education and UNESCO, and in events with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). ISBB has also been featured in ESD-focused events in North America, Africa, South America, Europe and Asia, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in sustainability education worldwide.
The school’s initiatives have been structured around a singular vision, which Elizabeth articulates as follows, “We want to grow these initiatives in the future and prepare students to be kind, responsible citizens of the world. We aim to set an example for others by incorporating global issues into its curriculum, encouraging creative, socially conscious learning that equips students to take the lead in an inclusive and sustainable future”.
