AI Integration In Education Gains Momentum In Thailand

    • Thailand integrates AI into education to boost student performance, digital literacy, and future-ready skills across the country
    • Pilot programs reach 700 schools and 60,000 students, with 2 million teachers trained and AI tools from Google and Microsoft incorporated into the curriculum
    • Focus on ethical AI use and innovation, combining digital citizenship education with long-term goals to transform Thailand from AI consumer to AI innovation leader

Thailand is undertaking a revolutionary process to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its education system to improve student performance and respond to the needs of a digital future. This effort by the Bureau of Academic Affairs and Educational Standards (BAAES) within the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) aims to turn around decades of academic deterioration and equip students with the skills needed to cope with a fast-changing technological environment.

At the national level, BAAES has created AI-based educational materials and teacher/students' handbooks. These materials aim to develop initial AI literacy in early learners. More than 60,000 students and 700 pilot schools have undergone training sessions, which is a strong stride toward ubiquitous AI adoption in classrooms.

BAAES Director Eakasit Piyasangtong emphasized the significance of this program, indicating the next stage will be to create an end-to-end AI ecosystem. That means having more access to devices, building local data centers, and setting up research hubs, while putting ethics education at center stage to guarantee proper usage of AI.

In support of this initiative, BAAES has collaborated with international technology giants Google and Microsoft, integrating tools such as Gemini, Chattivity, Deepseek, and Leonardo into the school curriculum. The collaborations are intended to equip students and teachers with sophisticated AI tools to boost learning experience.

Additionally, more than 2 million teachers have so far undergone training in AI, which has provided them with the competency to implement AI effectively in their teaching. At the same time, Thailand's Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) is pushing digital ethics through the Digital Citizen Plus curriculum.

The program aims at building 'digital intelligence' among teachers so that students learn to use technology responsibly, safely, and creatively. Through developing a culture of ethical use of technology, Thailand wants to educate students not only to excel academically but also to become active and responsible digital citizens.

The long-term vision of Thailand is to shift from being an AI consumer to being an AI innovation leader. This vision involves not just the use of AI tools but also the generation of local AI technologies and research skills. Through the funding of AI education and infrastructure, Thailand aims to be the leader of AI innovation, helping develop the world's technology and education.
