- AI classes launched in over 1,400 primary and secondary schools across Beijing.
- Curriculum includes coding, real world AI projects, and responsible tech use.
- Schools partner with tech firms to enhance hands on AI learning experiences.
Beijing has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) courses in more than 1,400 schools this academic year, aiming to boost AI literacy among students from an early age. The new curriculum includes at least eight AI focused classes annually, covering everything from coding basics to real world applications and responsible usage.
At Beijing National Day School’s First Branch, sixth grade students are already building simple AI systems like a chatbot simulating space pioneer Qian Xuesen. “It makes my thinking more dynamic and creative”, said student Sun Yufeng.
This initiative is part of China’s broader ‘AI+’ strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into all sectors, including education. The goal is to shift learning from rote knowledge transfer to skill based, creative problem solving.
Schools are customizing their approach to AI teaching. For example, Beijing Hongzhi Middle School uses a three tiered system, starting with introductory activities like tech fairs, followed by subject integrated AI courses, and finally advanced tracks for high performing students.
Some institutions are also partnering with tech companies to provide practical exposure. A branch of Beijing No. 2 Middle School collaborates with high tech firms, allowing students to explore robots and autonomous driving simulations. Engineers even co-develop and teach certain modules.

While the move is welcomed, educators are cautious about over reliance on AI. The Ministry of Education has issued guidelines to prevent misuse, such as submitting AI generated work for assignments.
Experts say AI education in China is still in its early phase and needs better curriculum planning to strike a balance between innovation and academic integrity.
