Synopsis
Dongseo University has launched Korea’s first AI Convergence Arts College, combining artificial intelligence with creative disciplines such as design, media, film, and digital content production. The program aims to train students in both artistic practice and AI-driven technologies, preparing graduates for emerging careers in the creative tech industry and strengthening Korea’s position in AI-powered cultural innovation.
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape industries worldwide, Dongseo University has announced a major transformation in higher education with the launch of Korea’s first AI-era creative convergence arts college, designed to integrate film, design, and media content under a unified academic system. The initiative represents a significant shift away from traditional department-based structures toward a more flexible, student-driven model where learners actively design their own majors and career pathways, reflecting the rapidly changing demands of the global creative economy.
The university revealed that it will officially host the 'STELLAR ARTS INSTITUTE Symposium and Launch Ceremony' at its Centum Campus Convention Hall, marking a formal introduction of the institute’s vision ahead of its full launch in March next year. The event is intended to communicate the strategic direction of the Stellar Arts Institute to both internal stakeholders and external industry and academic partners, highlighting its role as a flagship reform in Korean arts education.
The Stellar Arts Institute itself is the result of a structural integration of three existing academic units: the College of Design, the College of Media Content, and the Im Kwon-taek College of Film and Performing Arts. By merging these disciplines, the university aims to build a creative convergence education system that responds to an industry environment where creativity, storytelling, and technology increasingly intersect due to advancements in AI-driven production tools and digital platforms. The institution emphasized that the traditional departmental boundaries have been deliberately dismantled to allow for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
A central feature of the new model is its student-centered education design, which introduces a major-free system. Under this structure, students will not be required to declare a fixed major upon admission. Instead, they will explore different disciplines during their studies and select a specialization based on personal interests, aptitude, and evolving career goals. This approach is intended to reduce rigid academic boundaries and better prepare students for the fast-evolving content and cultural industries, where adaptability and cross-disciplinary knowledge are essential.

Another key component of the reform is the partnership with the globally recognized Minerva Project, an innovative education organization known for its project-based learning model and digitally integrated global classroom system. Through this collaboration, Dongseo University plans to introduce project-based learning methodologies, an active online learning platform, and global campus-linked experiences tailored specifically for arts and creative disciplines.
The academic structure of the Stellar Arts Institute will also expand significantly. Alongside its existing 14 majors, including design, film, broadcasting, games, webtoons, and musicals, the university will introduce three new future-oriented convergence majors: transmedia systems, sustainable systems design, and brand communication systems, bringing the total to 17 majors. These programs are designed to integrate content production, design thinking, brand strategy, and AI-powered storytelling, equipping students with industry-relevant creative and technical skills.
The curriculum will follow a four-stage developmental framework that begins with foundational thinking skills, progresses through creative core competencies, advances into convergence specialization, and culminates in advanced professional expertise. This structure is intended to nurture graduates who possess not only technical proficiency but also strong problem-solving abilities and innovative thinking in complex, real-world environments.
In terms of academic reputation, Dongseo University recently ranked 11th in Korea in the art and design field in the QS World University Rankings, standing out as the only institution outside the Seoul metropolitan area to achieve this distinction. It has also been selected for the government’s Glocal University 30 project, securing substantial financial support for the next five years to further enhance its global competitiveness.
University President Chang Je-kuk stated that the Stellar Arts Institute is not merely an academic restructuring but a foundational shift in the future of arts education. He emphasized that in the era of AI transformation (AX), the institute aims to evolve into a leading arts education platform in Asia, producing talent capable of bridging creativity, technology, and industry needs while addressing regional and global challenges.
