Thapar Institute of Engineering Set to Launch AI-enabled University in India

  • Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) has unveiled plans to launch the Thapar School of Advanced AI & Data Science (TSAAI), marking a significant advancement in educational offerings. This initiative comes following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TIET and NVIDIA. The collaboration aims to enhance research and education in these cutting-edge fields, promising to equip future generations with essential skills for the digital age.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Padmakumar Nair, Director of TIET said, “We are excited about the opportunity to establish this AI school, in technical collaboration with NVIDIA”. “This work will not only bridge the gap in AI expertise but also pave the way for cutting-edge research and innovation in this transformative field. This also establishes our vision of providing education that creates future-ready students”, he added.

“As a key player in the global AI education initiative, Thapar Institute will integrate cutting-edge NVIDIA technologies to cultivate a new generation of AI experts across India”, said Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director of Asia South at NVIDIA.

Under the terms of the agreement, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) will establish cutting-edge AI infrastructure utilizing NVIDIA DGX systems integrated with NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs, NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs, and the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software platform. This strategic initiative underscores TIET's commitment to advancing research and application of generative AI technologies, poised to foster innovation and excellence in the field of artificial intelligence and data science education.

This specialized data center will provide 227 petaflops of AI performance and nearly 8 terabytes of GPU memory. In addition to its advanced accelerated computing infrastructure, TIET is establishing edge computing capabilities with 500 Jetson Nano developer kits. This initiative aims to bolster the startup ecosystem, empowering graduates to become entrepreneurs and innovators rather than merely job seekers.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains at the forefront of global industry transformation, driving innovation, reshaping educational landscapes, and impacting lives. As part of the signed Memorandum of Understanding between TIET and NVIDIA, TSAAI will be established on TIET's Patiala campus.
