Changwon National University has taken a bold step in redefining mechanical engineering education in Korea with the launch of the GAST-College of Mechanical Engineering, the country’s first specialized college of its kind. This new college, evolving from the university’s long-standing Department of Mechanical Engineering, represents a forward-looking approach to education, research, and industry collaboration.
The acronym GAST stands for the Glocal Advanced Institute of Science & Technology in Artificial Intelligence, signaling a vision that combines global standards with local industry needs. The GAST-College aims to become a hub for mechanical engineering education and research that actively supports the growth and transformation of the Changwon National Industrial Complex 2.0 era.
In a move that highlights the university’s commitment to practical, industry-linked education, it has partnered with major local conglomerates, including Hyundai WIA, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hyundai Rotem, to create joint classrooms where students can learn directly from industry experts. Beyond traditional lecture halls, the university is building a 'campus factory' where students gain hands-on experience, working alongside engineers who also serve as adjunct professors.
In addition to practical training, the college is introducing specialized programs tailored to the industries of the future. Fields such as defense machinery engineering and next-generation nuclear power plant machinery are being developed as sub-majors to meet specific corporate demands, offering students employment-guaranteed pathways that distinguish the university from other mechanical engineering programs.
