Changwon National University has taken a bold step in redefining mechanical engineering education in Korea with the launch of the GAST-College of Mechanical Engineering, the country’s first specialized college of its kind. This new college, evolving from the university’s long-standing Department of Mechanical Engineering, represents a forward-looking approach to education, research, and industry collaboration.
The acronym GAST stands for the Glocal Advanced Institute of Science & Technology in Artificial Intelligence, signaling a vision that combines global standards with local industry needs. The GAST-College aims to become a hub for mechanical engineering education and research that actively supports the growth and transformation of the Changwon National Industrial Complex 2.0 era.
In a move that highlights the university’s commitment to practical, industry-linked education, it has partnered with major local conglomerates, including Hyundai WIA, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hyundai Rotem, to create joint classrooms where students can learn directly from industry experts. Beyond traditional lecture halls, the university is building a 'campus factory' where students gain hands-on experience, working alongside engineers who also serve as adjunct professors.
In addition to practical training, the college is introducing specialized programs tailored to the industries of the future. Fields such as defense machinery engineering and next-generation nuclear power plant machinery are being developed as sub-majors to meet specific corporate demands, offering students employment-guaranteed pathways that distinguish the university from other mechanical engineering programs.
The Changwon Investment program further supports high-achieving students, providing top scorers with priority access to domestic and international internships, creating opportunities to gain invaluable real-world experience. The GAST-College also emphasizes research collaboration. Joint degree programs with government-funded research institutes like the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute and the Korea Institute of Materials Science will allow students to participate in large-scale national R&D projects, strengthening both their research skills and the university’s overall innovation capabilities.

By aligning its curriculum with the industrial structure of Changwon and the Gyeongnam region, home to major mechanical engineering companies such as Doosan Enerbility, Hyundai WIA, Hanwha Aerospace, LG Electronics, and Hyundai Rotem, the college seeks to become a central hub for the domestic machinery industry.
Looking ahead, Changwon National University has ambitious goals for GAST. The college aims to be ranked among the top five domestic universities in mechanical engineering within five years, while also achieving a graduate employment rate of over 60% in leading corporations and public institutions. By recruiting top-performing students and maintaining a low student-to-faculty ratio, the university plans to enhance both education quality and industry readiness.
The establishment of the GAST-College of Mechanical Engineering reflects more than a structural reorganization; it is a strategic leap toward integrating academia with industry. University leaders anticipate that this initiative will boost production efficiency within the Changwon National Industrial Complex, generate significant added economic value, and reduce retraining costs for companies.
By cultivating local talent and fostering regional innovation, Changwon National University is positioning itself not only as an educational leader but also as a key contributor to the economic and technological vitality of the region. This vision represents a holistic approach to higher education, blending rigorous academic training with industry engagement and regional development, giving students a platform to excel while directly impacting Korea’s machinery industry and local economy.
