DepEd Expands Korean Language Program to Boost Skills

    • DepEd renews Korean language program in public high schools
    • Program equips students with global language and career skills
    • Partnership strengthens Philippines-South Korea educational ties

The Department of Education (DepEd) renewed its partnership with South Korea to continue teaching Korean in select public high schools across the Philippines. The move aims to help Filipino students gain international language skills and prepare for global careers.

The renewed agreement was signed by DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara and South Korea’s Education Minister Choi Kyo-Jin. The signing was also presented to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung during the latter’s state visit to Malacañang on March 3.

Under DepEd’s Special Program in Foreign Languages (SPFL), students can learn Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Chinese, and Korean. Launched in 2009, the initiative focuses on building cross-cultural competence and opening opportunities for both students and teachers. The Korean program began in 2017, with training and cultural immersion provided by the Korean Cultural Center of the Philippines (KCC).

“Renewing this partnership is more than teaching a language. It opens doors for students and teachers to global opportunities,” Angara said.

With the updated SPFL-Korean program, DepEd hopes students will gain skills that are internationally recognized, making them more competitive in higher education and future careers. The program also highlights the strong educational collaboration between the Philippines and South Korea, promoting cultural exchange and shared learning.

Through this initiative, Filipino learners will not only study a new language but also develop skills that can lead to global job opportunities and further academic success.
