- IIT Bombay and Tohoku University to offer a research-focused PhD program.
- Joint Master's degrees to be introduced after the PhD launch.
- Collaboration aims to strengthen educational and industrial ties.
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is all set to become international by launching a dual-degree PhD programme in association with Japan's Tohoku University next year. This program will create a dedicated Centre at Tohoku University, which will have a research-based PhD programme initially and is looking to launch joint Master's programmes later.
Tohoku University, which is a well-known and government-funded institution in Japan, will collaborate with IIT Bombay to combine Japan's technological prowess with India's scholarly achievements. This joint effort should augment educational possibilities while strengthening links between India and Japan through knowledge sharing, collaborative research, and exposure to Japan's leading industry and innovation networks.
The push for this twin-degree program gained momentum after a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Japan last month. There are presently about 1,600 Indian students studying in Japan, and the new collaboration is expected to further boost that figure. Japanese firms have been regularly hiring from IIT Bombay, and this adds an additional level of depth to this synergy.
The joint venture will begin with an emphasis on postgraduate studies, focusing on research and innovation, and not immediately offering undergraduate programs. The tie-up is meant to bring a synergy of Japan's technological base and India's software and engineering expertise, enhancing opportunities for both academic and industrial development.
