The Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, ended a successful visit to South Korea today in which she had high-level talks with the aim of enhancing co-operation between Hong Kong and Korea at the tertiary education level. While visiting Seoul National University (SNU), Dr Choi had a meeting with the president of SNU, Dr Ryu Hong Lim, to discuss greater cooperation and to enhance Hong Kong's international education hub positioning under the 'Study in Hong Kong' initiative.
Dr Choi emphasized the internationalized and diversified character of Hong Kong's post-secondary education industry, highlighting the endeavors of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government to further promote its international status. She mentioned that Hong Kong has been taking steps such as hosting global education conferences and exhibitions, and providing scholarships for the purpose of luring foreign students.
Dr Choi also presented the Northern Metropolis University Town project, a visionary project that will promote branded academic programmes, collaboration in research, and exchange projects with leading Mainland China institutions and other overseas organisations. The visionary initiative is intended to establish Hong Kong as a hub of innovative education and research.
In her meeting with SNU officials, Dr Choi extended an invitation to Korean universities to join future education mega-events in Hong Kong, such as the Learning and Teaching Expo during Digital Education Week in July and the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education Conference and Exhibition in February 2024. She also urged Korean students to study in Hong Kong or join short-term exchange programmes, highlighting the city's dynamism in academics and culture.
Aside from her activities at SNU, Dr Choi also met with Hong Kong students who were pursuing their studies at the university to understand their experiences. She exhorted them to come back to Hong Kong upon graduation to support the growth of the city.
Dr Choi’s visit also included courtesy calls to Chinese diplomatic representatives in Korea. She met with the Chinese Ambassador to Korea, Mr Dai Bing, and the Consul General of China in Jeju, Mr Chen Jianjun, to provide updates on Hong Kong’s latest education policies.
Dr Choi attended a side event of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Education Ministerial Meeting, where she visited an elementary school in Jeju to learn about its innovative approaches to AI and digital education.
Dr Choi’s visit to Korea concluded today, and she is set to travel to the United Kingdom tomorrow to continue promoting Hong Kong’s educational initiatives and international partnerships.
