Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), one of China’s most established research institutions, is strengthening its role as a major talent and innovation hub as it marks 101 years since its founding. The university continues to expand its cross-disciplinary education system, offering young researchers strong support, hands-on training, and access to advanced research platforms.
A recent milestone underscored SYSU’s leadership in technological innovation, the world’s first remote robotic subretinal injection surgery. The operation connected surgeons in Guangzhou and Urumqi using a domestically developed 5G-enabled ophthalmic robot. The landmark procedure was led by the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center with support from university engineering teams and partner hospitals.
Gao Song, SYSU President, said the school’s ability to attract top talent comes from its strong resources, generous research funding, dedicated lab facilities, and flexible evaluation policies that allow scholars to explore long-term ideas without pressure. The university also encourages academic freedom, helping young faculty pursue new interdisciplinary directions.
To support talent development in fast-growing scientific fields, SYSU launched the Institute for Frontier Interdisciplinary Research in Health Science and Technology. The institute integrates resources from its medical schools and hospitals to advance areas such as intelligent medicine, systems medicine, cell science, and clinical immunology.

Beyond healthcare, SYSU is investing heavily in environmental and marine research. Its research vessels recently completed deep-sea, Arctic, and polar expeditions, returning with valuable environmental data and offering students rare field-training experiences.
The university also promotes cultural learning through museum projects, student performances, and expanded library collections. With campuses across Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, SYSU continues to build strong academic networks and cross-border partnerships to train future-ready talent capable of addressing global challenges.
