MKIS Joins Nord Anglia in Major International Education Expansion

  • Synopsis

Nord Anglia Education is expanding its international school network in Southeast Asia with the addition of Mont'Kiara International School in Kuala Lumpur. The partnership will strengthen IB education opportunities in Malaysia while giving students access to Nord Anglia’s global learning ecosystem and international academic collaborations.

Global education organisation Nord Anglia Education has announced that Mont'Kiara International School (MKIS) will officially join its worldwide network of schools in August 2026, marking another major step in the company’s growing expansion across Southeast Asia.

The move will make MKIS the second Nord Anglia school in Kuala Lumpur alongside the British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), while also increasing Nord Anglia’s global network to 90 schools worldwide and 15 schools across Southeast Asia.

The announcement represents more than a business expansion. It reflects the rising global demand for international education models that combine academic excellence, multicultural learning environments, and internationally recognised curricula capable of preparing students for universities and careers across the world.

Established in 1994, Mont’Kiara International School has built a strong reputation as one of Malaysia’s leading International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools. The institution offers the complete IB continuum, including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). Alongside the IB pathway, the school also provides the US High School Diploma, giving students and families greater academic flexibility and broader university preparation opportunities.

Located in Kuala Lumpur’s prestigious Mont’Kiara district, the school currently educates more than 700 students representing over 45 nationalities, creating a highly diverse and globally connected learning community.

Education experts increasingly view such multicultural environments as critical in preparing students for the demands of an interconnected global economy, where adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and international exposure are becoming essential skills.

The integration of MKIS into Nord Anglia’s global education ecosystem is expected to provide students with expanded access to international collaborations, global learning initiatives, leadership opportunities, and innovative educational programmes connected to Nord Anglia’s worldwide school network.

The partnership also strengthens Nord Anglia’s academic presence in Malaysia by complementing the British curriculum offered at BSKL with a strong International Baccalaureate-focused institution. This creates wider curriculum choices for families seeking internationally recognised educational pathways in Kuala Lumpur.

MKIS has consistently demonstrated strong academic performance. In 2025, students achieved an average IB score of 34.4, significantly above the global average of 30.58. Graduates from the school have progressed to internationally respected universities, including University College London, University of Chicago, University of Toronto, London School of Economics and Political Science, and King's College London.

The school’s modern campus infrastructure also contributes to its strong academic and extracurricular profile. Facilities include advanced science laboratories, arts spaces, and athletics facilities designed to support both academic achievement and holistic student development.

The transition also marks a significant leadership milestone for MKIS. After more than 25 years of guiding the institution, Tan Sri M.S. Tan has chosen to entrust the school’s future to Nord Anglia Education as part of a long-term succession and growth strategy.

Industry observers note that global education groups are increasingly expanding into Asia due to the region’s growing demand for premium international schooling and globally recognised qualifications. Malaysia, in particular, has emerged as a rapidly developing international education hub because of its strategic location, multicultural environment, and strong demand for English-medium and IB-based learning.

Andrew Fitzmaurice, Chief Executive Officer of Nord Anglia Education, stated that MKIS aligns strongly with the organisation’s educational vision because of its academic excellence, established IB framework, and vibrant international community.

The expansion further highlights how international education providers are reshaping learning experiences by connecting students and educators across borders. Large global school networks now increasingly focus not only on academics but also on leadership development, global citizenship, innovation, and collaborative learning opportunities that prepare students for rapidly changing global industries.

For Malaysia’s education sector, the addition of MKIS into Nord Anglia’s international network could further strengthen the country’s position as an important destination for international education in Southeast Asia.

As international learning continues evolving beyond traditional classroom models, partnerships like this reflect the growing emphasis on globally connected education ecosystems capable of preparing students for future academic, technological, and professional challenges.
