Health Ministry Launches Recruitment Drive For 3,000 Student Nurses

    In a major step toward strengthening the country’s healthcare workforce and expanding opportunities for aspiring medical professionals, the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka has announced the recruitment of 3,000 student nurses through an extraordinary gazette notification. The large-scale intake represents the first phase of an ambitious national workforce development strategy aimed at adding 13,600 nursing personnel to the public healthcare system between 2025 and 2029. The initiative is expected to play a critical role in addressing future healthcare demands while providing thousands of young people with access to professional education and long-term career opportunities in the nursing field.

    The newly announced recruitment drive is open to students who successfully completed the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in either the science stream or mathematics stream during the years 2021, 2022, 2023, or 2024. By widening eligibility across multiple examination years, the government is creating opportunities for a larger pool of qualified candidates who may be seeking entry into the healthcare profession.

    According to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, eligible applicants can submit their applications through the ministry’s official website between May 29 and June 30. Following the application period, candidates who meet the required qualifications will be invited to participate in an interview process, after which the final selection of student nurses will be made. Training for successful applicants is expected to begin later this year, marking the start of their journey toward becoming professional nursing officers within Sri Lanka’s public health sector.

    The recruitment program is particularly significant because nursing remains one of the most essential professions in modern healthcare. Nurses serve as frontline caregivers, providing direct patient support, assisting physicians, monitoring treatment plans, and ensuring the smooth operation of hospitals and healthcare facilities. As healthcare systems worldwide face growing demands due to aging populations, chronic illnesses, and increased healthcare utilization, the need for well-trained nursing professionals continues to rise.

    Current figures from Sri Lanka’s health sector indicate that 43,553 nursing officers are presently serving in the state healthcare system. While this workforce plays a vital role in delivering medical services across the country, healthcare authorities recognize the need to expand staffing levels to meet future healthcare challenges and maintain high standards of patient care. The planned recruitment of 13,600 nursing personnel over the next several years is intended to ensure that hospitals, clinics, and healthcare institutions have access to a steady supply of qualified professionals.

    The latest recruitment initiative builds upon several recent efforts undertaken by the government to strengthen the healthcare workforce. Over the past two years, the ministry has recruited 3,441 Grade III nursing staff, helping to fill critical vacancies and improve healthcare service delivery. In addition, appointment letters were recently issued to 515 Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Nursing graduates, enabling them to begin their professional careers within the public healthcare sector.

    The country is also making substantial investments in nursing education and training. At present, nearly 7,800 student nurses are undergoing professional training at nursing schools throughout Sri Lanka. These institutions provide the academic knowledge, clinical experience, and practical skills required for future nurses to perform effectively in hospitals and healthcare settings. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on clinical training, students gain expertise in patient care, medical procedures, healthcare ethics, emergency response, and community health services.

    Education experts note that recruitment-linked training opportunities such as this not only address workforce shortages but also create stable employment pathways for young people. Nursing continues to be regarded as one of the most respected and in-demand professions globally, offering graduates opportunities for career advancement, specialization, and professional development.

    The Ministry of Health stated that the nationwide recruitment plan is being implemented under the guidance of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa, with the broader goal of building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system for the future. By investing in nursing education, expanding healthcare workforce development, and creating opportunities for thousands of aspiring healthcare professionals, Sri Lanka is taking significant steps toward ensuring quality medical care for its citizens while opening new educational and career pathways for the next generation of nurses.
