- Expansion aims to address doctor shortages, improve regional healthcare access, and strengthen quality and hands-on medical education nationwide.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved more than 10,000 new MBBS seats and 41 new medical colleges in India for the academic year 2025-26, a huge step towards the government's continuous process of increasing medical education. This announcement falls within a larger plan announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day in 2024, where plans for establishing 75,000 new medical seats in five years were announced. With this recent expansion, the overall number of MBBS seats in India will go from 1,17,750 in 2024-25 to 1,37,600 in 2025-26, demonstrating a clear push towards meeting increasing demand for trained medical professionals.
Along with undergraduate additions, the NMC has also given 3,500 new and renewed postgraduate (PG) medical seats clearance, taking the total capacity to some 67,000. Added to the increased MBBS seats, this is a total addition of some 15,000 medical seats in undergraduate as well as postgraduate streams for the next academic year. This two-level expansion reflects the government's emphasis not just on the production of more doctors but also on augmenting specialist medical expertise nationwide.
The increase is spread over several states, with most seats being added in existing and new medical institutions. Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh will receive 50 extra seats each. Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand will have an increase of 100 seats each, while West Bengal will get 150 new seats. These allotments are intended to support regional medical education facilities and provide a more equitable share of health care resources to the country.

This move by the NMC is part of the government's continued efforts to fill the doctor-patient gap and enhance national health care access. The increase in the number of medical colleges and seats will equip the country with the ability to accommodate the increasing needs for medical practitioners, especially in remote and rural communities. In addition to merely expanding numbers, the expansion of the colleges is also designed to raise the overall quality of medical education by opening up more avenues for hands-on exposure, research, and specialized study in newer areas of medicine.
In addition to this, PG seat expansion supports the UG expansion by developing specialized doctors who can treat intricate medical conditions, thus enhancing the overall health delivery system. With an eye on both UG and PG education, the government intends to build a sustainable pool of competent healthcare professionals capable of catering to India's future medical demands.
While the country is grappling with changing healthcare needs, such as an expanding population and growing disease load, the NMC's approval for new seats and colleges demonstrates a forward-looking strategy to create a strong healthcare workforce. Not only is this growth widening opportunities in medical education but also confirms that India is dedicated to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, ultimately leading to quality medical care becoming more available to country citizens.
