    • Students engage in excavation activities, interactive lessons, and creative projects to better understand cultural heritage and local history

In a move that’s turning history class into a hands-on adventure, the Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage has launched an immersive learning program that lets young students step into the shoes of real archaeologists. Announced on April 20, the initiative run under the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage is designed for third graders in the Buyeo area and will run through June 19.

Titled 'From Today! I Am Also an Archaeologist', the program blends classroom learning with real-world exploration, giving students a rare chance to interact directly with cultural heritage sites, archaeological excavation, and historical artifacts. At the heart of the experience is the Gwanbuk-ri Historic Site, a key location tied to the ancient Baekje royal capital and part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Baekje Historic Areas.

The program unfolds in three thoughtfully designed stages. In the pre-learning phase, students dive into visual learning by analyzing excavation images and mapping out the site’s historical context. The field learning phase is where the excitement peaks kids explore the site, participate in interactive quizzes, try hands-on excavation, and even create drawings inspired by traditional roof tile designs (sumaksae). Finally, in the post-learning stage, creativity takes over as students build 3D pop-up books to reflect on their discoveries.

Educators behind the program say the updated curriculum is tailored to a child’s perspective, making experiential education more engaging and effective. By connecting each stage seamlessly, the initiative not only boosts student engagement but also deepens their understanding of local history and buried cultural heritage all while making learning feel like an adventure rather than a lesson.
