Indonesia Launches New Immigration Research Center in Bali

    • Indonesia launches a new immigration research center at Udayana University
    • Center to strengthen academic-industry collaboration on immigration law and skills
    • Program to support training, policy research, and professional development through 2030

Indonesia has opened a new Immigration Research Center in Bali to strengthen education, policy studies, and professional skills in immigration management. The initiative is a joint effort between the Directorate General of Immigration and Udayana University (Unud), aiming to connect classroom learning with real-world immigration challenges.

The new center, called the Indonesian Immigration Policy and Analysis Center (Impact), will operate under Unud’s Faculty of Law. It will serve as a hub for research, training, and policy analysis, helping students and professionals better understand immigration law, foreign worker regulations, and legal issues involving international visitors.

Eko Budianto, Director of Visa and Travel Documents, said the collaboration will help immigration officers receive more academic support to strengthen oversight of foreign nationals in Indonesia. He emphasized the need for research-based insights to guide decisions in the field.

The partnership will run for five years, until 2030, and will focus on studying sensitive and complex cases, such as visa misuse for employment, nominee arrangements in property deals, and handling foreign nationals from conflict areas. These cases will be analyzed through legal, economic, and policy lenses.

Unud Rector Prof. I Ketut Sudarsana said the center will create a strong link between academic research and industry needs, offering evidence-based recommendations for the government. He highlighted that the program will improve knowledge, human resource quality, and contribute directly to public policy.

The center will also integrate immigration law coursework into Unud’s Master’s and Ph.D. programs. It will allow immigration professionals to serve as lecturers, thesis examiners, and pursue advanced degrees, further merging education with practical skill-building.
