The authorities of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia officially launched the Bachelor of Madrasa Education programme under the Institute of Islamic Education and Research, marking a new era for academic development and professionalisation in the madrasa education system of Bangladesh. This move is a significant stride toward integrating conventional religious education with modern pedagogical approaches, enabling teaching standards to rise across madrasas within the country.
The confirmation came with the publication of an admission test circular signed by IIER director Professor M Mostafizur Rahman, which initiated a structured and accredited academic pathway for those aspiring to build careers in madrasa education. The newly announced programme is one year long, divided into two semesters, and it is designed to strengthen the core areas such as teaching methodologies, curriculum design, and academic management for the madrasa sector. For decades, the madrasa system has played a very important role in religious and cultural education in Bangladesh, yet the demands for standardisation and professional development have increased.
IU wants to bridge the gap between traditional religious teaching and contemporary academic frameworks by offering a university-recognised degree focusing particularly on madrasa education. The curriculum promises to equip learners with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to bring innovation, critical reasoning, and improved instructional quality into the madrasa classroom.
Admissions for the 2025-26 academic year are already open and will continue from November 4 to November 30, with a total of 50 seats available in the first batch. The competitive and limited intake reflects the commitment of the institution to maintain high academic standards and thereby produce graduates capable of becoming change-makers within the madrasa education system.

The prospective candidates are required to collect the admission forms by depositing Tk 1,500 at the Agrani Bank branch located on the IU campus, ensuring easy access for applicants from across the country. As such, the total programme fee has been estimated to be Tk 30,000, thus keeping it considerably affordable for a wide pool of students and teachers who want further academic enrichment.
Admissions will be competitive, based on performance in an admission test, to ensure that only qualified and motivated people are enrolled. This indicates how seriously Islamic University takes the integrity and quality of the academic program. University officials think that the graduates of the Bachelor of Madrasa Education program will contribute significantly to raising the quality of religious teaching, encouraging pedagogical reform, and cultivating a new generation of professionally trained madrasa teachers.
In so doing, IU is seeking to reinforce not just individual career development but the system of education in Bangladesh as a whole through the institutionalization of teacher development into a recognized academic framework. In fact, the launching of this program is considered a milestone as it brings traditional Islamic education into step with modern academic expectations, thus setting the stage for more systematic, inclusive, and progressive learning models in the madrasas throughout the country.
