Sabah Offers Free Education and Student Loan Relief

    • Sabah will offer free education at two state institutions, UCSF and KTYS.
    • The state plans to subsidize PTPTN and Yayasan Sabah loans to reduce student debt.
    • Over 100,000 students and graduates are expected to benefit from these initiatives.

Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has announced a major step to support students in the state. The government will provide free education at two state owned institutions, University College Yayasan Sabah (UCSF) and Kolej Teknologi Yayasan Sabah (KTYS).

Alongside this, a subsidy scheme for the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) and Yayasan Sabah loans will be introduced. This move aims to ease the debt burden of more than 100,000 borrowers, giving students better financial security while they pursue their studies.

“This initiative reflects our strong commitment to education and the future of Sabah’s youth”, Hajiji said during the Sabah Undergraduates Convention.

Education has been at the heart of the state government’s priorities under the SMJ Development Blueprint. Since 2021, over RM1.3 billion has been allocated to education, the largest in Sabah’s history. The government has rolled out more than 14 education focused programs, including financial aid for students studying within and outside the state.

In 2025 alone, the state allocated RM136 million in scholarships, benefiting thousands of students. The creation of the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS) further strengthens support for those facing financial challenges.

Hajiji emphasized that these efforts are possible because of Sabah’s growing revenue, which has reached nearly RM7 billion.
