The Maritime Information Market size is expected to reach $4.26 billion by 2030 according to Mordor Intelligence. Trade liberalization across economies has largely contributed to the growth of this industry globally. As we witness the emergence of new-age shipping companies and merchant exporters, the number of interested candidates who want to undergo higher education in maritime studies is also increasing.
However, it can be seen that institutions have a very limited number of courses related to marine studies, which results in unsatisfactory career choices for candidates. Considering the current demand, institutions need to come up with programs that support student choices in education.
In this regard, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has been able to make a difference by offering a wide range of courses related to marine, oceanography, and the aquatic ecosystem with dedicated labs and faculty for each of the courses.
UMT is primarily a university focused on marine studies and tries to integrate all the possible streams of learning in that aspect. It is committed to shaping the future of its students by integrating all the latest resources into courses and making them sound academically. “We try to structure the courses in such a way so that students prosper globally and also uphold their communities. Generating knowledge benefits the country’s communities and ensures the sustainability of people and culture”, mentioned Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr Mohd Zamri Ibrahim, Vice Chancellor, UMT.
Focus on R&D
The institution has made a mark in marine and oceanography R&D on campus. Here, students are provided with ample opportunities to explore their interests and participate in activities that enhance their knowledge about real-world conditions. The maritime sector is subject to rapid changes where there has been the incorporation of new processes and technologies that require expertise and knowledge to work on.
UMT has diversified marine studies in such a way that it encompasses all possible streams, including fisheries and food sciences, ocean technology, computer sciences, maritime management, and social economy, which add significant value to the segment of marine sciences.
The students have access to numerous field research opportunities while pursuing a course which encourages curiosity in candidates. “Our goal is to provide holistic education to all the students. We are known for our infrastructure and are equipped with all the world-class facilities. These include cutting-edge labs, specialized sessions, and many other things. We want to uphold the communities by means of global collaborations. We host events inside campus that address pressing issues such as climate change and biodiversity maintenance. We are committed to making an impact on the minds of our students and the society at large”, stated the Vice Chancellor.

UMT has dedicated schools of study for different aspects of marine studies. It has a dedicated institution within the campus for Aquaculture. This course is one of the aspects that make the institution stand apart in the education sector. It is a differently thought idea that provides students with real-world situations and how to deal with them. Oceans everywhere are subject to massive exploitation that is bringing doom to marine life in various regions.
Many marine species are on the verge of extinction because of various malpractices, and the current generation needs to understand the severity of this situation. It is not only harmful to the aquatic ecosystem but also to us. Marine resource management is something that UMT specializes in, followed by a dedicated course in fisheries. “We have a centre of excellence within the campus that stands testimony to our advanced courses to promote the blue economy. We provide field opportunities to students as well as internships that give them real-world insights and prepare them for the future. The institution also provides students with placement assistance through its industry collaborations across the world”, said the Vice Chancellor.
Looking Ahead
UMT has gained significant trust and recognition through advanced courses in marine studies and a vision to serve the community. Looking ahead, the institution plans on expanding the number of courses offered, followed by recruitment of new faculty. It wants to establish learning centres in other countries that include China, Indonesia, Qatar, and others in the coming years. “Currently, our student strength is 11,000, and we plan to provide education to 15,000 students in the next 3–5 years”,concluded the Vice Chancellor.
