China Scraps 12,000 Courses in Massive Push for AI-Focused Education

  • China has carried out the most sweeping restructuring of its higher education system in a generation. Between 2021 and 2025, Chinese universities revoked or suspended 12,200 undergraduate degree programmes more than 30 per cent of the country’s total while simultaneously launching 10,200 new ones. The programmes being phased out are concentrated in the humanities, arts, foreign languages, human resources, accounting and management. In their place, universities are building an AI-first curriculum tightly aligned with Beijing’s industrial ambitions.

    The scale of the change is unprecedented. Public administration, accounting, HR management, international economics, editing and advertising fields that once produced millions of graduates each year are being treated as increasingly redundant. In an economy where artificial intelligence already handles hiring screens, financial reconciliations, content moderation and customer service, demand for traditional graduates in these areas has fallen sharply. Foreign language departments, long regarded as prestige programmes, are also being wound down as large language models outperform human translators in speed and cost.

    Of the roles that Chinese graduates have historically targeted programming, accounting, editing and sales many have seen sharp declines in job postings since 2018. AI tools are absorbing tasks faster than the labour market can adjust, leaving large numbers of degree holders underemployed or unemployed.

    What is replacing the discontinued programmes is deliberately industrial. Universities are launching majors in semiconductor design, robotics engineering, AI systems integration and a rapidly emerging field known as embodied intelligence the science of embedding advanced AI into physical machines and humanoid robots so they can operate in the real world. Nine universities have already introduced formal degree programmes in embodied intelligence, a subject that barely existed as an academic discipline five years ago. The goal is not merely to teach students how to use AI tools, but to train a generation capable of building, deploying and refining the systems that will underpin China’s next industrial base.

    The overhaul is driven as much by economic necessity as by long-term strategy. Youth unemployment for the 16–24 age group has hovered between 15 and 19 per cent in recent years. More than 12.7 million students were expected to graduate in 2026 alone. The previous model expanding university enrolment broadly across all disciplines and assuming the economy would absorb graduates stopped working years ago. 

    Millions of degree holders have been unable to find work matching their qualifications, fuelling public frustration and a growing cultural scepticism toward traditional higher education. Beijing is now forcibly aligning what universities teach with what the economy is projected to need.

    This represents a live, national-scale experiment in centrally directed curriculum design. China is stripping out fields it has judged AI will render largely redundant and doubling down on areas where human-AI collaboration is expected to remain essential. Whether the strategy produces the skilled AI workforce the government is betting on, or simply exchanges one form of graduate unemployment for another, will become clearer within the next five years.

    The implications extend well beyond China’s borders. For countries such as India, where HR, MBA and accounting degrees remain among the most popular programmes, the Chinese overhaul poses an early and unavoidable question: how long before similar pressures force a comparable reckoning? As AI continues to reshape labour markets globally, the Chinese model of rapid, top-down curriculum realignment offers both a warning and a potential template.

    Supporters of the reform argue that universities must stay relevant to the industries of the future rather than continue producing graduates for shrinking professions. Critics caution that eliminating large parts of the humanities and social sciences risks narrowing intellectual diversity and weakening skills in critical thinking, communication and ethical reasoning competencies that remain valuable even in an AI-driven economy.

    For now, the direction is clear. Chinese higher education is being re-engineered around artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced manufacturing. The 12,200 programmes that have disappeared mark the end of an older educational model. The 10,200 new ones signal Beijing’s determination to shape the workforce it believes the next decade will demand.
