- UP Baguio launches DIC to enhance digital automation and AI capabilities.
- Emphasis on responsible, transparent, and accessible use of AI for all students and faculty.
- Faculty and students receive guidance on AI limits, risks, and proper usage.
The University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio is taking a big step toward integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its systems, aiming to strengthen its digital capabilities and prepare for the future of global technology.
UP Baguio Chancellor Dr. Joel Addawe said the university has established the Digital Innovation Center (DIC) to meet its growing need for digital automation. The center will provide end-to-end services and support to ensure the university’s IT resources are used efficiently and productively.
Speaking during the 2025 Development Policy Research Month North Luzon Media Kickoff on August 20, 2025, Addawe highlighted that the DIC will follow principles of ethical and responsible technology use.
“Within the principles of transparency and fairness in UP, AI research and development at our Digital Innovation Center adheres to the vision that digital citizenship must be ethical and responsible. Technology should integrate with academic and social discourse and must not leave anyone behind”, Addawe said.
He stressed that all innovations introduced through the DIC will be accessible to all members of the UP Baguio community, ensuring technology provides opportunities for everyone. “Risks are part of technological advancement, but with continuous research, such risks can be mitigated, if not eliminated”, he added.
Addawe also emphasized accountability in AI use. He pointed out that AI can automate many functions, but generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, may pose risks such as cheating and plagiarism. Both teachers and students must be responsible for how they use AI and the outcomes of their actions.
“That means if a student uses AI for unfair or unethical gain, there are consequences for such actions”, he said.
To address this, UP Baguio continues to conduct training for faculty and students, helping them understand the limitations of AI and their responsibilities. Addawe noted that clear guidelines are laid down to prevent misunderstandings and ensure proper use.

He further said that UP Baguio is investing in AI to make it available and accessible to students at all levels. Across the UP system, the university has actively developed AI initiatives, including its first PhD program in AI, a Center for Intelligence Systems, and the UP AI Advisory Board.
With these steps, UP Baguio aims to combine innovation, accessibility, and responsibility, making AI a tool for education and growth while maintaining strong ethical standards.
