SMU Launches Resilient Workforces Institute for the AI Era

    • SMU launches a new research institute focused on jobs, skills, and lifelong learning in the age of AI
    • Institute partners with industry and government to study workforce resilience and adult education
    • Initiative aims to support future-ready skills and inclusive employment in Singapore

Singapore Management University (SMU) has launched the Resilient Workforces Institute (ResWORK), a new university-level research center focused on strengthening workforce resilience and lifelong learning as artificial intelligence and digital technologies continue to reshape jobs and skills.

ResWORK is among the first institutes in Singapore and the region to examine the future of work and adult learning through an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. It brings together expertise from economics, management, behavioral science, and technology to help workers, organizations, and societies adapt to rapid technological change.

The institute was officially launched in the presence of Dr. Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. He highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between academia, industry, and government to help workers manage disruption caused by AI and digital transformation.

Professor Lily Kong, President of SMU, said the institute reflects the university’s focus on research that informs public policy and workplace practices. She added that ResWORK will support Singapore and the region in responding to evolving skill needs and new models of work.

ResWORK’s research centers on three key areas: enabling effective collaboration between humans and AI, redesigning organizations for AI-driven workplaces, and shaping policies that support smooth labor market transitions and inclusive employment.

The institute has already brought together more than 20 faculty members from SMU’s six schools, along with several global visiting scholars. Early research projects, backed by over S$1.5 million in funding, focus on applied and policy-relevant outcomes.

SMU has committed S$5 million over five years to support ResWORK and plans to secure additional external funding to expand its research programs and partnerships.
