Assam Trains 50,000 Youth in Japanese for Global Jobs

    • Assam plans to train 50,000 youth in Japanese for jobs in Japan.
    • The government cuts fees and offers easy loans for language training.
    • Talks underway with South Korea and Germany to expand overseas job options.

Assam is preparing its youth for international careers by training 50,000 students in Japanese under the Chief Minister’s Foreign Language Initiative for Global Human Talent (CM-FLIGHT). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the program will open job opportunities abroad while boosting Assam’s economy through foreign remittances.

At a recent event in Guwahati, Sarma highlighted the importance of language skills for working overseas, especially in Japan. The initiative aims to equip youth with Japanese language proficiency needed to apply for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa, which covers over 160 job categories in Japan. He shared that Japan is eager to welcome more workers from Assam and praised the potential of Assamese youth.

The Assam government has cut training fees in half, making it more affordable for candidates. Now, applicants pay only Rs 30,000, with the rest covered by Assam and Japanese governments. Axis Bank has also agreed to provide easy loans for this amount. Training will start with 200 students at the NorthEast Skill Centre, with plans to open more centers at Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University if demand grows.

In addition to Japan, Assam is in talks with South Korea and Germany to create similar overseas employment pathways. Candidates aged under 45 with basic education qualifications can apply. While no official placements have been made yet, some Assamese youths have already found jobs in Japan independently after learning Japanese.

CM-FLIGHT, run by the Assam Skill Development Mission and SEED, aims to build skilled, globally employable talent for Assam’s bright future.
